Headway The Brain Injury association

Every year in the UK, more than one million people attend hospital accident and emergency rooms following a head injury – around 135,000 have to be admitted due to their injury’s severity. The effects of such injury are often physical, cognitive and emotional, however, thanks to medical advances many more people are now surviving horrific accidents, adapting and living with their condition.

Headway – the brain injury association, has grown from its humble beginnings in 1979, to a national organization comprised of over 100 groups and branches, each dedicated to promoting public understanding of the many aspects of brain injury. It provides a lifeline of information and support to people living with a brain injury, their families and carers through magazines and factual booklets, a confidential helpline and local meetings. Headway also supports professionals working in the health and legal sectors and actively lobbies government in areas such as health and safety in the workplace and on the roads.

Headway North Cumbria is a branch of the national organization and operates under its registered charity number. It fully subscribes to the charity’s ethos of help and support for local people in Carlisle and North Cumbria. The branch undertakes many fundraising activities and outings for its members. It meets for monthly support meetings – a chance for members to share anxieties, hopes and fears with likeminded, understanding people. Weekly day services in Carlisle provide a base for members to meet and take part in arts and crafts etc.
